Grinding or removal?

Stump grinding uses a toothed cutting wheel to grind the stump below the soil surface and leaves chips and soil behind. It's the usual choice for homeowners. Full stump removal excavates the stump and main roots, which is mostly needed for construction or new utility lines.

Plan the grind

  • Depth: a few inches below grade for lawn, deeper for replanting or building.
  • Roots: ask whether surface roots running across the lawn are included.
  • Chips: leave them as fill and mulch, or haul them off.
  • Access: gates, steps, slopes and lakefront lawns all affect which machine can get in.
  • Locates: call 811 a few days before grinding so buried utilities get marked.

Federal Way stump notes

Large old cedar and fir stumps, some left from the area's logging days, can be enormous and may take more than one visit or a bigger grinder. Alder and big-leaf maple stumps sprout back readily, so grinding stops the regrowth. Near lakes, wetlands and streams, ground-disturbing work may need city approval. Grinding an existing stump is usually minor, but check with the city if you're inside a critical area buffer.
